Scooter rental Curacao

Once in Curacao you think you’ll leave the long traffic jams of the Netherlands behind you, but that may be disappointing. It remains busy on some roads with more and more residents, tourists and interns. The roads have improved, but Curacao’s infrastructure can sometimes struggle to handle the number of cars. So more and more people are choosing to take scooters on the road.

Scooter rental on Curacao?

Renting a scooter on Curacao is a practical solution often opted for by people who come to live on Curacao temporarily and cannot or do not want to buy a car. It is inexpensive, easy parking and you can smoothly get through any traffic jams.

Benefits of renting a scooter on Curacao

Of course, there are advantages to renting a scooter on Curacao:

1. Economical transportation

Scooter rental on Curacao is a cheap alternative to a mode of transportation. Especially if you are only on Curacao for a few months, renting a scooter is a great solution to get around the island without spending a few thousand euros buying or renting a car.
You already rent a scooter for a minimum rental period of 3 days and if you want to rent for a few months there are interesting long term rates.

2. No driver’s license required

You can rent a scooter in Curacao without a driver’s license. This is often the reason Curacao interns rent a scooter. The minimum age to rent a scooter in Curacao is 18.

3. No traffic jams

On some roads in the morning and/or in the evening during rush hour, there is a real traffic jam. With a scooter, of course, you don’t have to deal with that; whizzing past the stationary cars, you reach your destination in no time.

Scooter on Curacao: ideal

A scooter is a great mode of transportation in Curacao. In the relatively small city, your scooter will get you to your destination quickly. And in the crowds (e.g., every morning and afternoon on the Caracas Bay Road) you can drive past the cars just fine. A helmet and lock are included when you rent the scooter, so you don’t have to worry about that yourself.

Scooter on Curacao: insurance

A scooter cannot be all-risk insured in Curacao, but a WA insurance is applicable. Make sure you have your own health insurance (for internships) or travel insurance (for vacations) with coverage in Curacao. It is quite normal for the rental company to charge you a deposit of NAF 500 (US$ 265) or more for the scooter.

Tips for scooter rental on Curacao

If you find the dangers manageable and decide to rent a scooter on Curacao, keep the following tips in mind:

  1. If you want to rent a scooter for a longer period of time (e.g. an internship period of several months) you can usually agree on a special price with the scooter rental company.
  2. ALWAYS wear a helmet. Yes, your hair gets tangled and it’s hot, but it’s legally required to wear a helmet on a scooter in Curacao. The fine for riding a scooter without a helmet is NAF 75!
  3. Try to avoid riding your scooter in the dark as much as possible. You yourself cannot see the potholes, cracks and bumps in the road, and despite your lighting, other road users cannot see you as well. Especially later in the evening when the likelihood of drunk drivers increases, it can become a bit less safe for scooters on Curacao.
  4. As such, you can ride a scooter just fine on Schottegatweg, Willemstad’s ring road. Just keep driving nicely on the right, and you’ll be fine. It will also be manageable in residential areas. The danger is on the busier roads that connect to Schottegat Road. Consider, for example, Caracas Bay Road or Santa Rosa Road. These are busy roads where traffic can go fast, but most of all, the danger comes from traffic that can stop or turn off at almost any place along the road, or just want to get onto the road.
  5. Make sure your horn works and use it! If it looks like a car is overlooking you, push your horn!
  6. Remember, you cannot cross the high Juliana Bridge with a scooter. So if you want to get from Punda to Otrobanda (or v.v.), the only option is to walk across the pontoon bridge with your scooter in hand.
